Giant Trilobite Fossil : Phacops : Eldredgeops Milleri

Yes; you can still find good things on eBay. I won’t tell you the remarkably affordable price I paid for this fossil, but it suffices to say, it’s probably one of the top five purchases of the past twelve months. It’s an absolutely gigantic and quite rare Phacops trilobite from the Devonian period. The trilobite appears to be an extinction specimen that is frozen in time, crawling over an obstacle.

6.5″ Actual Total Length

The original features are all intact, including fantastic eye facets, which have the tiniest details visible (schizochroal eyes). Bumps, similar in size, appear on the thoracic lobes (rounded articulating facets). The trilobite was captured in its natural state during an extinction event, so the lifelike appeal is optimal.

Sources indicate that the Phacops fossil originated in Morocco. The species appears to be “eldredgeops milleri“. This is how the creature appeared in its natural habitat over 360-450 million years ago; during the Devonian Period in the Paleozoic Era.

The measurement following the curvature of the creature is 17 cm long from nose to the end of the pygidium (tail). The compressed length as a curled example is 10.5 cm directly across from the front of the cephalon (nose) to the tip of the tail. The substrate stone is not as long as the fossil part and both together weigh 740 grams, which is approximately one pound, ten ounces.

This specimen looks like it has never been restored, repaired or refinished. The fossil and substrate are a grey-black stone of the same color.

This type of trilobite is difficult to find in such a large size. Although hammer marks appear on the median between the substrate and the trilobite, there is no apparent damage.

Trilobites appear in 10 separate orders, consisting of 150 families and 5000 genus. Over 20,000 individual separate specimens have been reported and new ones are added every year. The trilobite was a segmented creature with a hard shell, whose fossils appear in every continent of the globe.

The Timeline

Described as the first major “complex” life form, the trilobite has faceted eyes that are very well represented in the shown example. The eyes are considered by paleontologists to have been the most advanced of any living thing from the same period. The trilobite was essentially the “blueprint” to all life today, and he was extinct long before dinosaurs even walked the earth.

This is a very well defined “Phacops” from the Order Phacopida in the species: Eldredgeops milleri. This specimen is considered to be among the largest available. Its size and appearance make it museum-worthy.

We have not listed it for sale yet…but we will entertain offers in the meantime…
